Dutton
Year-end statement from Tim Dutton :-

2008: An "Entertaining" year

Many bosses worry about the recession, for some it's a completely new frightening experience - Dutton has unfortunately seen it all before, the 1973 three day working week, the 1982 and 1992 recessions - survived and worked through them all.

"What defines us is how well we rise after falling"
(Anon)

With many companies shedding staff, closing facilities and cutting back on research and development Dutton is doing the opposite:

  • Move closer to the sea to a factory with its own slipway into the River Arun
  • Doubling factory size with addition of a mezzanine floor
  • Spent more on R & D in '08 Q4 than the last 3 years added together
  • Already launched 2 new 2009 models
  • Even higher spend this year on R & D in Q1
  • Launch of an exciting ALL NEW high-speed amphibious sports car in Q2- please do not ask for info on this new model yet (This will compliment our existing increased range)

40 years On

By far the most important event for us this year is our celebration of 40 years of car production and 20 years of amphibious car production

  • To put this into context, Dutton was the first company ever to seriously 'productionize' kit car manufacture resulting in building 8000 cars between 1969 and 1989
  • Dutton is the oldest car company in the world to still be wholly owned by its founder (unless anyone knows otherwise)
  • The first amphibious car Dutton made was in 1989. No other company comes anywhere near us for longevity. The most famour amphibious car ever - the Amphicar - was only built for 2 years then the company haemorrhaged for a further 2 years in a desperate attempt to sell off the remaining stock

RELIABILITY AND QUALITY

For 40 years Tim Dutton has been building cars that are deliberately basic - this means they are easy and inexpensive to service / repair anywhere in the World. Many amphibious companies have come (and all gone) who build 'so called' high-tech "state of the art" craft - and why are none of them still around? Because they are unreliable and stop working when they get wet.

It doesn't matter how many degrees or diplomas you have there can NEVER be a substitute for 40 years of continual vehicle production. At Dutton we can look at a component and "see" what it will look like in 10 years time and design / position it accordingly - you certainly can't learn that looking at a computer screen. This is borne out by our spectacular lack of warranty claims. In 20 years and well over 100 amphibious cars all we have replaced under warranty is a self-locking nut, a clutch cable, an air conditioning hose and a hydraulic hose (and three of the four claims were down to the original part supplier).

Factory Factory
*A quick search on the Internet will show up dozens of "pretend" amphibious car makers, unfortunately it is a lot easier to construct a web site than it is to manufacturer a production amphib so to sort the "wheat from the chaff" try this test: - contact the company, say you want a full road and water test and see cars being manufactured in their factory and then sit back and wait for the excuses to roll in as to why you can't actually do that.
Anyone interested in amphibs, submarines and flying cars should visit: www.landairandsea.com. They are also interested in extending their range of exhibits so if you know the whereabouts of any similar craft they would be interested in hearing from you.
Dutton
2nd Dutton ever made, this Dutton P1 based on the Mk1 Sprite was built in 1969 and is still going strong today. Photographed in 2005 to celebrating the 25th year of the Dutton Owners Club www.duttonownersclub.co.uk. The DOC look forward to you joining them with your Dutton or Amphijeep.
